Only a handful of attorneys have the skills and expertise to handle high exposure criminal defense cases. Barry Zimmerman is one of the best. With over 40 years of experience as a criminal defense lawyer, he has tried over 150 jury trials to verdict. He has been certified as a specialist in criminal law by the State Bar of California for 25 years and has been recognized as a Northern California Super Lawyer for 20 years. Barry Zimmerman has earned the reputation to take on some of the highest-profile cases in Northern California.

Recently featured on NBC Dateline with Keith Morrison, Mr. Zimmerman handled post murder conviction proceedings for former Major League Baseball pitcher Danny Serafini in People v. Serafini (Placer County CA).

In the matter of People v. Arthur Prosser (Nevada County CA), Mr. Zimmerman won a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity in the high-profile crossbow shooting of the defendant’s brother which occurred while the defendant was suffering a paranoid psychotic break from reality.

In the matter of People v. Rory Banks (Yuba County CA) Mr. Zimmerman tried to verdict one of the first Q Anon murder cases in the nation.

In the matter of People v. Michael Sargent (Yuba County CA), Mr. Zimmerman argued the first “shaken baby” case before the California Supreme Court.

In all, Barry Zimmerman has tried well over 20 life-exposure cases to verdict. Over the last 40 years he has handled every type of criminal case. He has successfully represented high-profile clients charged with murder, vehicular homicide, sex crimes, shootings, crimes against persons, narcotics offenses and property crimes.

The Cohen Defense Group is one of Northern California’s largest criminal defense firms, and Barry Zimmerman is our senior litigating attorney.

Compassionate and thoughtful, Mr. Zimmerman is passionate about the law because he sees it as a great equalizer: the rare situation where the individual is on equal footing with the government. “You have the same procedural rights as everyone else. I think it’s the last and best part of democracy. You’ve got your right to trial by jury, due process rights, and constitutional rights. You can really take on and defend against the most powerful entities in the world and prevail.”

According to colleague Alison Cohen, “No one works harder than Barry. He fights the government every step of the way to get the best outcome for his clients. He just closed a case where he filed a motion on his client’s behalf every single day that trial was pending. That kind of dedication to the work is inspiring. We all learn from Barry every day.”

Mr. Zimmerman has been an Auburn resident since 1990. He raised his family here and cares deeply about the community. He served multiple years on the board of the Placer County Bar Association and runs an annual golf tournament to raise funds for Legal Services of Northern California, ensuring legal protection for low-income people. When he’s not in the courtroom, you may find Barry practicing classical guitar or enjoying the great outdoors of the Eastern Sierra.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Zimmerman was admitted to the California Bar in 1987. Education: University of California, Santa Barbara (B.A. 1983); Golden Gate University School of Law, San Francisco (J.D. 1986). He is a long-standing member of California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and of the Placer County Bar Association.
